Limited to 6 students.

Using two different product brands, this training will focus on mixing, applying and finishing both water-based and solvent liquid metal binders.. Tool recommendations, marketing and hands on experience.

Lunch is included in price as well as various pastries and beverages. Evening at Bentleyvile.

Tentative schedule

Day 1

  • Introduction

  • Discussion on differences in binders and metals.

  • Safety measures

  • Discussion on priming options

  • Discussion on application methods

  • Demonstrations

  • Discussion on sanders, sanding and polishing methods and sanding disc types

  • Execute your own samples

Day 2

  • Discussion on various special effects and mixtures

  • Discussion and hands on use of various patinas and darkening agents

  • Discussion of and hands on use of various sealers

  • Marketing and pricing

Day 3

  • Discussion and hands on use of using epoxy and other goodies with liquid metal

  • Learn and execute honing your samples for a satin stone-like appearance

  • Discussion of product resources

Class should end by noon.

Some finisher experience is required. If unsure please ask.

RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES

I suggest you do not purchase any major tools prior to class. There will be a lot of instruction in class on various tool options and possible hands-on use of some.

Required tools

  • Respirator mask (for blocking dust)

  • Protective gloves

  • Application trowel and application scrapers if desired. The Co.Me Flex Trowel is highly recommend and can be purchased at Faux Design Studio. Color Atelier also carries them in 3 styles.

Optional

There will be a variety of stencils, decorative rollers and tools to make decorative effects, however you are welcome to bring your own.

Travel

Air Travel

You can check into flights to Duluth (DLH) here. https:// www.google.com/travel/flights.

If you prefer to fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul (msp) it is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours south of Duluth. There is an inexpensive shuttle from the msp airport.

Some hotels to check would be Tru by Hilton (4 miles) , Days Inn by Wyndham Lakewalk (1 mile). Country Inn and Suites by Radisson (5 1/2 miles) is closest to the airport.

The Canal Park area on Lake Superior is the hotspot to stay, but also the highest rates. Pier B is a favorite.

Fitger’s Inn was converted from the old Fitger’s Brewery into a hotel, with shops and restaurants. If you stay here you will want to ask for a lake view. There is road construction due to hospital expansion.
