Certification Training

Training course introduces you to liquid metal products. We will focus on mixing, applying and finishing the coating. Participants will learn some easy techniques and time will be spent on how to market and sell liquid metal finishes.

Tentative schedule for a 3 day intensive

Day 1

  • Introduction to liquid metals (history, uses)

  • Discussion on priming options

  • Discussion on application methods

  • Demonstrations using trowel, roller and brush applications.

  • Execute your own samples on 16 x 20” boards

  • Discussion and demonstration of spray methods

  • Execute your own samples

Day 2

  • Discussion on sanders, sanding and sanding disc types

  • Sand your own boards

  • Polishing options

  • Discussion and application of sealers.

  • We will create a finish on an actual surface. Past projects have included an elevator door, countertop, door, and sink.

  • Marketing and pricing liquid metal

  • Every effort is made to bring in a representative from Mirka, Festool or SurfPrep so you can get a feel for an extraction system, if you choose to use one.


Day 3

Focus will be on using the solvent binder if there is interest from classmates, and niche marketing. You will also need to demonstrate hands-on experience from start to finish.

  • Training in the mixing and use of the solvent binder

  • Discussion on various special effects and mixtures

  • Working with patinas

  • Actual surface project

  • More intense marketing class

  • Certification through LiquidMETL

Referral service after you completed first actual job with reference, unless an actual surface was done in class.

Recommended supplies

I suggest you do not purchase any major tools prior to class. There will be a lot of instruction in class on various tool options and possible hands-on use of some.

Required tools

  • Respirator mask (for blocking dust)

  • Protective gloves

  • Application trowel and application scrapers. I recommend the Co.Me Flex Trowel

Optional

Orbital sander with dust collector. OnIy bring your own if you don’t want to share. Recommended sanding discs in 240, 600, 1000 on up. They do not have to be exact. Available individually at Auto Paint and Body stores. Mirka, Festool or SurfPrep is the recommended brand. We are using SurfPrep in class.

There will be a variety of stencils, decorative rollers and tools to make decorative effects, however you are welcome to bring your own.
